Hinterlüftungs

Hinterlüftungs, a German term, translates to "back ventilation" or "ventilated facade" in English. It refers to a specific construction technique used for exterior walls, particularly in modern architecture. The core principle involves creating an air gap between the outer cladding of a building and the underlying insulation or load-bearing wall. This air cavity is strategically designed to allow for the natural circulation of air.

The primary function of Hinterlüftungs is to manage moisture. Any moisture that penetrates the outer layer, whether from driving rain or condensation within the wall structure, can escape through this ventilated space. The airflow helps to dry out the facade and prevent the accumulation of dampness, which can lead to structural damage, mold growth, and reduced thermal performance.

Beyond moisture control, Hinterlüftungs also contributes to thermal regulation. In warmer months, the moving air in the cavity can help to carry away heat, reducing the temperature of the building's interior. In colder months, the air gap can act as an additional layer of insulation. This system is commonly employed with materials like stone, wood, metal panels, and fiber cement boards as the outer cladding. The proper design and installation of the ventilation openings at the top and bottom of the air gap are crucial for its effectiveness.
