Hiilivetymonomeerejä, commonly known as hydrocarbon monomers, are small molecules composed solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms that can chemically bond to form long chains or networks. These building blocks are fundamental to the petrochemical industry and the creation of a vast array of synthetic materials.

The simplest hydrocarbon monomers include ethene (ethylene), propene (propylene), and butene. Ethene, with its double bond, is particularly reactive and serves as the primary monomer for polyethylene, one of the most widely produced plastics globally. Propene is the monomer for polypropylene, another versatile plastic. Longer chain hydrocarbons with double bonds, such as butadiene, are crucial for the production of synthetic rubbers.

The process by which these monomers link together is called polymerization. This can occur through various mechanisms, such as addition polymerization, where monomers add to a growing chain without the loss of any atoms, or condensation polymerization, where a small molecule, like water, is eliminated during the linking process. The properties of the resulting polymer are heavily dependent on the type of monomer used, the polymerization conditions, and the molecular weight of the polymer chains. Understanding and controlling these factors allows for the design of materials with specific characteristics, such as flexibility, strength, thermal resistance, and chemical inertness, which are essential for applications ranging from packaging and textiles to automotive parts and construction materials.
