Hiilikerrostumat

Hiilikerrostumat, a Finnish term, refers to layers of coal found within sedimentary rock formations. These deposits are typically formed from the accumulation and fossilization of plant matter over millions of years. The process begins with vast quantities of organic material, primarily from ancient forests and swamps, being buried under sediment. Over time, the pressure from overlying rock and the heat generated by geological processes cause this organic matter to undergo chemical and physical changes, a process known as coalification.

The stages of coalification result in different types of coal, each with varying carbon content and energy potential. Peat is the initial stage, followed by lignite (brown coal), sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal, and finally anthracite, which is the highest rank of coal. Hiilikerrostumat can vary significantly in thickness and extent, depending on the geological history of the area. Their formation is closely linked to periods of high biological productivity and subsequent burial conditions. These coal seams are often found interbedded with other sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, shale, and limestone.
