Hiilidioksidisammuttimet

Hiilidioksidisammuttimet, or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, are a type of portable fire suppression device. They work by displacing oxygen in the vicinity of a fire and also by cooling the burning material. This dual action makes them effective against certain types of fires.

These extinguishers are typically identifiable by their characteristic black and white color coding, though this may vary by region or manufacturer. They are distinguishable from other extinguisher types by the presence of a distinctive horn-shaped nozzle, which is designed to discharge the cold carbon dioxide gas.

Carbon dioxide extinguishers are particularly well-suited for Class B fires (flammable liquids) and Class C fires (electrical fires). This is because carbon dioxide is non-conductive, making it safe to use on energized electrical equipment. It also leaves no residue, which is advantageous for protecting sensitive electronics or machinery.

However, carbon dioxide extinguishers have limitations. They are generally not recommended for Class A fires (ordinary combustibles like wood and paper) as they may not effectively cool the material sufficiently to prevent re-ignition. Additionally, the cold discharge can cause thermal shock to certain materials. In enclosed spaces, the displacement of oxygen can pose an asphyxiation hazard, so proper ventilation and evacuation procedures are crucial when using them. The operation involves pulling a pin, squeezing a lever, and directing the nozzle at the base of the fire.
