Hibakusha

Hibakusha is a Japanese term meaning "explosion-affected person." It specifically refers to individuals who were exposed to the radioactive fallout from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The term encompasses survivors who were in or near the cities at the time of the bombings, as well as those who were exposed to the fallout from a distance.

The immediate aftermath of the bombings saw a vast number of deaths and injuries due to the intense heat, blast wave, and radiation. Survivors, the hibakusha, faced a range of severe health consequences in the years and decades that followed.
