Heuristikákat, often translated as heuristics, are mental shortcuts or rules of thumb that people use to make decisions and solve problems quickly and efficiently. These shortcuts are not always perfectly accurate and can sometimes lead to errors in judgment, but they are generally effective in everyday situations where a perfectly rational or exhaustive analysis is not feasible or necessary. Heuristics are particularly useful when faced with complex information or time constraints.

One common heuristic is the availability heuristic, which involves estimating the likelihood of an event based on how easily examples come to mind. For instance, people might overestimate the risk of a plane crash because dramatic images of such events are readily available in the media. Another is the representativeness heuristic, where judgments are made based on how well something matches a prototype or stereotype. This can lead to stereotyping or making assumptions about individuals based on their group affiliation. The anchoring and adjustment heuristic involves starting with an initial piece of information (the anchor) and then adjusting it to reach a final decision, though the adjustment is often insufficient.

Heuristics play a significant role in cognitive psychology and behavioral economics, explaining many seemingly irrational human behaviors. While they can lead to biases, they are also essential for navigating the complexities of the world with limited cognitive resources. Understanding heuristics helps in recognizing potential biases in our own thinking and in the decisions of others.
