Herättäjäyhdistys

Herättäjäyhdistys, often translated as the Awakening Society, is a Finnish religious movement with roots in the Laestadian revivalist movement. It was formally established in 1865, though its origins can be traced back to the fervent preaching of Lars Levi Laestadius in the mid-19th century. The movement's core tenets emphasize personal repentance, forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ, and the importance of living a life according to biblical teachings.

The Herättäjäyhdistys is characterized by its emphasis on communal worship, often featuring singing of hymns, prayer, and sermons. A distinctive feature is the "Sermon of the Word" (sanan saarna), a form of communal prayer and confession where individuals can seek counsel and absolution. The movement has a strong presence in Northern Finland and among Finnish-speaking populations in Sweden.

While originating within Lutheranism, the Herättäjäyhdistys maintains a distinct identity with its own theological interpretations and practices.
