Hermod

Hermod is a figure in Norse mythology, a son of the chief god Odin and his wife Frigg. He is most famously known for his role in the myth of Baldr's death and attempted resurrection.

After the god Baldr was killed by a dart of mistletoe, thrown by his blind brother Hodr, Odin was deeply grieved. Hermod, being a swift and courageous god, volunteered to ride to Hel, the underworld, to plead with the goddess Hel for Baldr's return. He mounted Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir and journeyed through the dark and treacherous realm.

Upon reaching Hel, Hermod encountered the goddess who ruled there. He conveyed Odin's plea and explained the great sorrow that had befallen the gods. Hel agreed to release Baldr, but only if all beings in the nine worlds would weep for him, demonstrating their love and sorrow. Hermod then rode back with the news.

All creatures did indeed weep, except for a giantess named Thökk, who refused to shed tears, effectively preventing Baldr's return from the underworld. This event is a significant episode in Norse mythology, highlighting themes of grief, divine intervention, and the capriciousness of fate. Hermod is often depicted as a messenger god, characterized by his bravery and dedication to his family.
