Hepatotoksilisus refers to the adverse effects of chemical substances on the liver. The liver is a vital organ responsible for numerous metabolic processes, including detoxification of drugs and other foreign compounds. Due to its central role in metabolism and detoxification, the liver is particularly susceptible to damage from toxins.

The spectrum of hepatotoxicity can range from mild, reversible changes in liver enzyme levels to severe conditions such as acute liver failure. Factors influencing the likelihood and severity of hepatotoxicity include the dose and duration of exposure to the toxic agent, the individual's genetic predisposition, pre-existing liver conditions, and interactions with other medications.

Common causes of drug-induced hepatotoxicity include certain medications like acetaminophen (paracetamol) in overdose, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and some herbal supplements. Non-drug causes can include environmental toxins, alcohol, and viral infections.

Symptoms of hepatotoxicity can be varied and may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. In more severe cases, confusion, bleeding, and coma can occur. Diagnosis typically involves liver function tests, imaging studies, and sometimes a liver biopsy.

Prevention and management strategies focus on identifying and avoiding known hepatotoxins, using medications at appropriate doses, and monitoring individuals at risk. Treatment for hepatotoxicity depends on the underlying cause and severity, and may involve discontinuing the offending agent, supportive care, or in severe cases, liver transplantation.
