Hengitystyötä refers to the muscular effort required to breathe. It involves the coordinated action of various muscles, primarily the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, to expand and contract the chest cavity, facilitating the movement of air into and out of the lungs. In a healthy individual, breathing is an automatic and largely unconscious process, with minimal perceived effort. However, certain conditions can significantly increase breathing workload.

Conditions that impair lung function, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, can lead to increased respiratory muscle activity. This is because the lungs may be less elastic or airways may be narrowed, requiring greater force to move air. Similarly, conditions that affect the respiratory muscles themselves, like neuromuscular diseases, can also increase the work of breathing.

The body's response to increased respiratory effort can include faster breathing (tachypnea) and the use of accessory breathing muscles in the neck and shoulders. This increased workload can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath (dyspnea), fatigue, and anxiety. Managing the underlying cause of increased breathing work is crucial for improving a patient's comfort and overall health. Medical interventions often focus on improving lung function, strengthening respiratory muscles, or reducing airway inflammation.
