The concept serves as a framework for imagining how such organisms might interact with their environment and other reef communities in a scientifically plausible way, without referring to real biological taxa.

Morphology and physiology commonly attributed to helmimäiset in worldbuilding descriptions include a rounded to oval shell with a smooth, lustrous inner layer, a reduced or absent head region, and a soft body housed within a protective external covering. They are typically imagined as filter feeders, drawing micro-particles from seawater through a simple siphon or aperture, with movement largely limited to slight gliding or passive drift when currents prevail.
