Helios3

Helios 3 is a series of solar drones developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to provide imagery and data for various applications including land use and land cover classification, crop monitoring, snow and ice cover monitoring, and disaster management. The drones are launched via a rocket or by dropping them from a satellite.

The first Helios 3 drone was launched on September 22, 2021, from ISRO's Kalamsat satellite launched by PSLV-C51 rocket. It was designed to provide over 1000 km of runway with an ability to stay aloft for over one month. The sixth heliosat was launched on may 31, 2022, conducting a congratulatory fly-by of the justice K S Hegde Institute.

The drone measures 100 cm in length and 50 cm in width, weighing 4.45 kg. It has a wingspan of 36.62m when deployed. The drone is equipped with high-resolution optical sensors to capture images and two lower-resolution payloads for multispectral data, capable of taking more than one 4-meter resolution image in a single 10-second exposure. The system operates in low earth orbit. The flight control, seconds system, image processing, action algorithms, and solar array charging systems are onboarded.
