Hedelmöittäminen

Hedelmöittäminen, commonly known as fertilization, is a crucial biological process in sexual reproduction. It occurs when a male gamete, or sperm, fuses with a female gamete, or egg, to form a single cell called a zygote. This zygote contains the combined genetic material from both parents, initiating the development of a new individual.

In plants, hedelmöittäminen typically involves the transfer of pollen, containing the male gametes, to the stigma of a flower. This transfer can be facilitated by wind, water, or various pollinators like insects and birds. Once on the stigma, the pollen germinates and grows a pollen tube down to the ovule, where fertilization takes place.

External fertilization occurs outside the body, as seen in many aquatic species like fish and amphibians, where sperm and eggs are released into the water.
