Heartleaved

Heartleaved refers to a characteristic shape of a leaf that resembles a heart. This shape is typically defined by a notch at the base where the petiole, or leaf stalk, attaches. The two rounded lobes at the base curve outwards, creating a distinct heart-like silhouette as the leaf tapers towards its apex. Many plant species exhibit heart-shaped leaves, and this morphology is often a recognizable feature for identification purposes.

The term heartleaved is descriptive and is applied across various plant families. For example, plants like the redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) and certain species of morning glory (Ipomoea) are known for their prominently heart-shaped leaves. The venation pattern within a heart-shaped leaf can vary, with palmate or cordate venation being common. Cordate refers specifically to a heart-shaped leaf with veins radiating from the base. While the overall shape is the defining feature, the size, texture, and color of heart-shaped leaves can differ significantly between species.
