Hearstory

Hearstory is a term used to describe the historical narratives and accounts that are primarily transmitted through oral tradition rather than written records. It emphasizes the importance of listening, remembering, and retelling to preserve knowledge, cultural practices, and collective memories across generations. Unlike history, which often relies on documented evidence, hearstory acknowledges the significance of spoken word, songs, epics, and personal testimonies as vital sources of historical understanding.

The concept of hearstory highlights the role of storytellers, elders, and community members as custodians of the past. These individuals act as living archives, sharing information through performances, conversations, and communal gatherings.
