Havaintotutkimusten, which translates to "observational studies" in English, refers to a type of scientific research where data is collected by observing subjects or phenomena in their natural setting without any intervention or manipulation by the researcher. This contrasts with experimental studies, where researchers actively change variables to see the effect. In observational studies, researchers aim to describe or explain patterns, relationships, and correlations between different factors as they naturally occur.

These studies are commonly employed in fields such as medicine, psychology, sociology, and ecology. For instance, a medical observational study might track the health outcomes of a group of people over time to identify potential risk factors for a disease. Similarly, a psychologist might observe children's behavior in a playground to understand social interactions.

Observational studies can be prospective, where subjects are followed into the future, or retrospective, where researchers look back at past data. They are valuable for generating hypotheses, exploring complex phenomena that cannot be ethically or practically manipulated, and for studying long-term effects. However, a key limitation is that they cannot definitively establish cause-and-effect relationships due to the potential for confounding variables, which are factors that might influence both the exposure and the outcome. Despite this, observational studies play a crucial role in advancing scientific understanding.
