Hautaufheller, also known as skin lighteners or skin whiteners, are cosmetic products intended to lighten the skin's complexion or reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. These products work by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. Various active ingredients are used in skin lightening products, including hydroquinone, kojic acid, arbutin, vitamin C, and certain plant extracts.

The use of skin lightening products is prevalent in many cultures worldwide, often driven by aesthetic preferences that associate lighter skin with beauty, status, or purity. However, the practice is also a subject of significant controversy and concern. Many skin lightening agents can cause adverse side effects, ranging from mild irritation, redness, and dryness to more severe issues like ochronosis (a bluish-black discoloration of the skin), thinning of the skin, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and in some cases, systemic health problems if absorbed into the bloodstream.
