This technique involves collecting a sample of skin cells or material from the surface of the skin. The purpose of a skin scraping is to identify or rule out various skin conditions, particularly those caused by parasites, fungi, or bacteria.

The procedure is generally straightforward and minimally invasive. A healthcare professional or veterinarian will typically use a scalpel, curette, or sterile swab to gently scrape the affected area of the skin. The collected material is then transferred to a microscope slide or other suitable medium for examination. Microscopic examination of the skin scraping can reveal the presence of microscopic organisms such as mites (e.g., for scabies or Demodex), fungal elements (e.g., for ringworm), or specific types of bacteria. This information is crucial for accurate diagnosis and the subsequent selection of appropriate treatment. Depending on the suspected condition, the sample might also be sent to a laboratory for further testing, such as bacterial or fungal cultures.
