Hatiora

Hatiora is a genus of plants in the cactus family, Cactaceae. It is native to South America, primarily found in Brazil. The genus is distinguished by its segmented, flattened stem joints, which are often pendulous and appear somewhat leaf-like, although they are true stem structures. The flowers are typically small and appear in clusters at the tips of the segments, varying in color from white to pink or yellow depending on the species.

Hatiora plants are epiphytic or lithophytic, meaning they grow on other plants or on rocks in their natural habitat. They prefer humid environments with filtered light, often found in rainforests or cloud forests. In cultivation, Hatiora species are popular as houseplants due to their attractive foliage and delicate blooms. They require well-draining soil, moderate watering, and protection from direct sunlight and frost.

The genus Hatiora was formerly included within the genus Rhipsalis, but it is now recognized as a distinct group. There are several recognized species within Hatiora, with Hatiora salicornioides being one of the most well-known. This species, often called "dancing bones" or "mistletoe cactus," is characterized by its numerous slender, jointed segments. Propagation is typically done through stem cuttings, which root relatively easily.
