Hashimotokilpi, also known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland. It is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. In Hashimoto's, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and gradual destruction of thyroid tissue.

This autoimmune process typically results in a reduced ability of the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are crucial for regulating metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and many other bodily functions. When hormone production is insufficient, various symptoms can arise, including fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, and depression.

The exact cause of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Individuals with a family history of autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, may have an increased risk. The condition is more common in women than in men.

Diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is usually made through blood tests that measure thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and thyroid antibodies, such as anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies. Ultrasound of the thyroid may also be used. Treatment typically involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy, where synthetic thyroid hormone is taken orally to supplement the body's deficient production. With appropriate treatment, most individuals with Hashimoto's can manage their condition effectively and lead normal lives. Regular monitoring of thyroid hormone levels is important to ensure optimal dosage of medication.
