Harshavardhana, more commonly known as Harsha, was a prominent 7th-century emperor who ruled northern India from Kannauj. His reign is dated roughly 606 to 647 CE. He built a large empire centered at Kannauj and extended influence into eastern and northern territories. He is remembered for patronizing arts and learning; Banabhatta, his court poet, wrote the Harshacharita, a life of Harsha, and the Kadambari. The Chinese traveler Xuanzang visited his capital and left accounts describing Harsha as a powerful and benevolent ruler; Harsha is often linked with a period of cultural revival and religious tolerance, with both Hindu and Buddhist institutions receiving patronage.

After Harsha's death, his empire fragmented, giving way to regional powers that would form the political landscape of northern India in the ensuing centuries. The Harsha era is frequently cited in Indian chronicles as a high point of early medieval culture, with literary and religious activity noted at his court and in his realm.

In modern times, Harsha remains a common given name in India and among South Asian communities. It is used across various languages derived from Sanskrit and continues to appear in literature, media, and genealogies.
