Hangváltozások is a Hungarian term that translates to "sound changes" in English. It refers to the systematic modifications that occur in the pronunciation of words over time within a language. These changes are a natural and inevitable part of language evolution, driven by various linguistic and social factors.

Linguistic sound changes can manifest in several ways. Phonetic changes involve slight alterations in the articulation of sounds, often influenced by neighboring sounds or the ease of pronunciation. Phonemic changes are more significant, leading to the merger of distinct sounds or the splitting of a single sound into two. For instance, a vowel might shift its place of articulation, or a consonant might be dropped or added in certain environments.

Historically, sound changes have been crucial in the divergence of languages. For example, the Latin language underwent numerous sound changes as it spread across Europe, eventually leading to the development of distinct Romance languages like Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Linguists study historical sound changes by comparing related languages and reconstructing their common ancestor.
