Handweight

Handweight, in fitness and rehabilitation, refers to a small weight designed to be held in the hand during exercise. Handweights are a subset of free weights and are typically lighter and easier to handle than larger dumbbells or barbells. They are commonly used for upper-body exercises, walking workouts, aerobic routines, and therapeutic rehabilitation, as well as in physical therapy settings to improve grip strength, endurance, and range of motion.

Construction: Handweights may be solid or hollow with adjustable weights. They come in fixed-weight versions (single weight units) or adjustable sets where plates can be added or removed. They are frequently coated with vinyl or neoprene for comfort and grip, and may have ergonomic, knurled, or textured handles. Typical consumer handweights range roughly from 0.5 kg to 5 kg (1 to 12 pounds), though heavier options exist for more advanced training.

Use and benefits: Because they are portable and easy to manipulate, handweights are commonly used in workouts such as walking, aerobics, circuit training, and home exercise programs. They enable incremental loading without the need for bulky equipment; proper technique is important to reduce injury risk. Common guidelines include selecting a weight that allows multiple repetitions with controlled movements, warming up, and maintaining a neutral wrist alignment.
