Handungsespitze

Handungsespitze is a mountain in the Eastern Alps, situated in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The summit rises to an elevation of 2,203 metres (7,234 feet) and is part of the Granatspitzgruppe within the Wettersteingebiet. The peak lies north of the town of Steinach am Brenner and is surrounded by limestone cliffs and alpine meadows typical of the region.

The name Handungsespitze derives from the German words “Handung” (hand) and “Spitze” (summit), a reference to the mountain’s distinct, hand-shaped ridgeline visible from the valley below. Geologically, the mountain consists mainly of Paleogene limestone and dolomite, with secondary thrust faults near the summit that have created steep rock faces. Glacial deposits from the last Würm glaciation are found on its eastern flank.

First recorded ascent was made by mountaineers in the late 19th century when climbing routes were established to the east ridge and the south face. The easiest route is the normal route via the south ridge, which is a moderately steep scramble rated UIAA II; rock climbing sections can be encountered but are usually avoided by less experienced climbers. More technical routes, such as the west face, attract seasoned alpinists and are graded up to alpine grade VI.

The surrounding area is part of a protected landscape that promotes both hiking and conservation. Several marked trails traverse the foothills, providing panoramic views of the Ötztal Alps and the Brenner Pass corridor. Popular tourist destinations nearby include the village of Maishofen and the Zwischentoren Pass, making Handungsespitze a common stop for hikers exploring the eastern Tyrolean highlands.
