Handelsmargen

Handelsmargen, often translated as trading margin or simply margin, refers to the collateral a client must deposit with a broker to trade securities. This deposit is used to cover the risk of potential losses on the client's positions. Essentially, it's a good faith deposit.

When a trader buys or sells a security on margin, they are borrowing funds from the broker to purchase or sell it. The trading margin is the amount of the trader's own capital that must be used for the transaction. This allows traders to control a larger position than they could with their own cash alone, amplifying both potential profits and potential losses.

The specific amount of trading margin required can vary depending on the security, the broker's policies, and regulatory requirements. For example, the initial margin might be a percentage of the total value of the securities being traded. Maintenance margin is another important concept, representing the minimum amount of equity that must be maintained in the margin account. If the account equity falls below the maintenance margin level, the trader will receive a margin call, requiring them to deposit additional funds or securities to bring the account back into compliance. Failure to meet a margin call can result in the broker liquidating the trader's positions.
