They may also continue to higher levels of commercial education, such as specialized trade schools, business-oriented vocational programs, or further studies at Berufsschulen or Fachhochschulen, depending on national regulations.

Today the exact name and structure vary by country and region; many systems have replaced the term Handelsklassen with more specific designations such as Kaufmännische Schule, Handelsschule, Wirtschaftsschule, or Wirtschaftsklassen, while preserving the same general goal of preparing students for business careers.
