Handelsbeschränkungen, commonly referred to as trade barriers, are governmental restrictions and policies that limit the import or export of goods and services. These measures can take various forms, including tariffs, quotas, subsidies, embargoes, and non-tariff barriers such as import licenses or stringent product standards. The primary objective behind implementing trade restrictions is often to protect domestic industries from foreign competition, generate revenue for the government, or achieve political aims.

Tariffs are taxes imposed on imported goods, increasing their price for domestic consumers and making domestically produced goods more competitive. Quotas, on the other hand, set a physical limit on the quantity of a particular good that can be imported into a country during a specified period. Subsidies are financial assistance provided by governments to domestic producers, lowering their production costs and enabling them to compete more effectively with imports. Embargoes are complete prohibitions on trade with a specific country or on certain types of goods, often enacted for political reasons. Non-tariff barriers are more subtle but can be equally effective in restricting trade by creating administrative hurdles or technical complications for foreign businesses.

The economic impact of trade restrictions is a subject of extensive debate. Proponents argue that they safeguard jobs, promote national security, and allow developing economies to nurture nascent industries. Critics contend that these barriers lead to higher prices for consumers, reduce consumer choice, stifle innovation by limiting competition, and can provoke retaliatory measures from trading partners, ultimately harming global trade and economic growth. International organizations like the World Trade Organization (WTO) aim to reduce and regulate these trade barriers to promote freer and fairer international commerce.
