Hampaat

Hampaat is the Finnish word for teeth. In humans and many other vertebrates, teeth are hard, calcified structures in the jaws that enable biting, tearing, grinding, and speech. They are organized into different types and are protected by gums and surrounding bone.

Anatomy: Teeth consist of enamel, the hard outer layer; dentin beneath; a central pulp chamber containing nerves and blood vessels; and cementum that covers the roots and anchors the tooth in the jaw via the periodontal ligament. The visible portion is the crown, while the portion below the gum line is the root.

Types and dentition: In humans there are four major tooth classes—incisors, canines, premolars, and molars—each serving specific functions in food processing. Humans typically develop two dentitions: primary (deciduous) teeth, of 20 teeth, which emerge in infancy and are eventually shed; and permanent teeth, of 32 teeth, which replace the primary set during childhood and adolescence, including wisdom teeth in many individuals.

Health and care: Dental health is affected by hygiene, diet, and genetics. Common issues include dental caries (cavities) and periodontal disease. Preventive practices include brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, limiting sugar, and regular visits to a dental professional.

Variations and evolution: Dentition varies across species. Some animals have multiple sets of teeth that are continually replaced, while others have fixed dentition. In humans, tooth shapes and numbers can vary slightly among individuals.
