Hammasrattaiden, often translated as gears, are mechanical components with teeth that mesh with another toothed part to transmit torque and rotation. They are a fundamental element in countless mechanical systems, enabling changes in speed, direction, and power. The shape of the teeth is crucial for smooth and efficient operation, with common profiles including involute and cycloidal.

The primary function of a gear is to transmit rotational motion from one shaft to another. When two gears mesh, the teeth of one gear engage with the teeth of the other, causing both to rotate. The ratio of the number of teeth on each gear determines the speed and torque transfer.
