Halsjucken

Halsjucken is the Swedish term for itchy throat, a common symptom characterized by irritation in the throat that may trigger coughing or throat clearing. The sensation can be temporary or persistent and may reflect benign causes or signal an underlying condition.

Most frequent causes include viral upper respiratory infections such as the common cold or influenza, allergic rhinitis and postnasal drip, dry air or low humidity, irritants such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, or chemical fumes, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and vocal strain.

Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on history and examination. Persistent throat itching with red flags such as fever lasting several days, difficulty swallowing or breathing, weight loss, or a lump in the throat warrants medical evaluation. In some cases, tests such as throat swab, allergy testing, or imaging might be used.

Management focuses on symptom relief and treating underlying causes. General measures include staying hydrated, humidifying air, gargling with warm salty water, throat lozenges, and avoiding irritants. For allergies, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids; for postnasal drip, nasal saline or corticosteroids; for reflux, dietary changes and, if needed, acid-suppressing therapy. Antibiotics are not useful for viral causes. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist beyond a couple of weeks or worsen.

Prognosis is usually favorable, with most cases resolving when the underlying cause is managed. Prevention includes minimizing exposure to irritants, treating allergies effectively, maintaining good hydration and humidity, and avoiding smoking.
