Halogeenilisäystavat, also known as halogenation methods, refer to a range of chemical reactions used to introduce one or more halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine) into an organic molecule. These methods are fundamental in organic synthesis, enabling the creation of compounds with altered reactivity, solubility, and biological activity.

One common approach is electrophilic addition, typically used for alkenes and alkynes. In this process, a halogen molecule, such as Br2 or Cl2, acts as an electrophile, attacking the electron-rich pi bond. This results in the addition of two halogen atoms across the double or triple bond, often following Markovnikov's rule regarding regioselectivity.

Free radical halogenation is another significant method, particularly for alkanes. This reaction is initiated by UV light or heat, which cleaves the halogen molecule to form highly reactive halogen radicals. These radicals then abstract a hydrogen atom from the alkane, generating an alkyl radical. The alkyl radical subsequently reacts with another halogen molecule, propagating the chain reaction and forming a haloalkane. This method is less selective and can lead to a mixture of products.

Nucleophilic substitution is also a crucial pathway for halogenation. In this type of reaction, a halogen atom replaces another atom or group within a molecule, typically a leaving group such as a hydroxyl or tosylate. Reagents like phosphorus halides (e.g., PCl3, PBr3) or thionyl chloride (SOCl2) are commonly employed for converting alcohols into alkyl halides.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution is used to introduce halogens onto aromatic rings. In the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, such as FeBr3 or AlCl3, a halogen molecule becomes polarized, and the halogen acts as an electrophile, attacking the electron-rich aromatic system. This results in the substitution of a hydrogen atom on the ring with a halogen atom. The choice of method depends on the substrate's structure and the desired regiochemistry and degree of halogenation.
