Haloalkanit

Haloalkanit, commonly called haloalkane or alkyl halide, is an organic compound in which one or more hydrogen atoms of an alkane have been replaced by a halogen atom (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine). The general formula is Rx, where R is an alkyl group and X is a halogen. Haloalkanit is a broad class that includes mono-, di-, tri- and polyhalogenated derivatives.

Classification: haloalkanit can be categorized by the number of halogen substituents (mono-, di-, tri-, tetrahalogenated) and by the carbon framework, giving primary, secondary or tertiary haloalkanes depending on the halogen-bearing carbon. Examples include chloromethane (CH3Cl), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), chloroform (CHCl3) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Brominated and iodinated analogs include methyl bromide (CH3Br) and iodomethane (CH3I).

Properties: haloalkanits are typically nonpolar or moderately polar and have low to moderate water solubility. They often show higher boiling points with longer carbon chains. The carbon–halogen bond polarity and bond strength govern reactivity. They participate in nucleophilic substitution (SN1 and SN2) and elimination reactions to form alkenes. C–F bonds are strong and fluoroalkanes can be less reactive under many conditions.

Preparation: haloalkanits can arise by halogenation of alkanes (radical halogenation under light) or by substitution of alcohols with hydrogen halides or with reagents such as SOCl2 (chlorination) or PBr3 (bromination). They also appear as intermediates in organic synthesis and in various industrial processes.

Applications and safety: haloalkanits are used as solvents (e.g., dichloromethane, chloroform), reagents in organic synthesis, and in various industrial products. Many haloalkanits are toxic and some are persistent environmental pollutants. Regulatory controls apply to emissions and disposal, and exposure is managed due to potential health risks.
