Halmstad

Halmstad is a coastal city in Halland County, Sweden. It serves as the seat of Halmstad Municipality and lies along the Nissan River near the Kattegat coast. The urban area is a regional center with a population in the several tens of thousands, while the wider municipality accounts for a larger number of residents.

Historically, the area has medieval roots and was part of Denmark for much of the early modern period. Halmstad grew as a trading and fishing town, and its fortifications and harbor reflected its strategic position on the coast. The region became Swedish in 1658 following the Treaty of Roskilde, and the city developed further through the modernization of trade, industry, and infrastructure in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Today, Halmstad has a diversified economy that emphasizes education, health care, services, tourism, and light manufacturing.
