Halfinstanton

Halfinstanton, or half-instanton, is a term used in some areas of quantum field theory to describe a localized field configuration that carries roughly half the topological charge of a conventional instanton. In standard four-dimensional gauge theories on a closed manifold, topological charge is quantized as an integer. Halfinstantons arise in contexts where this quantization can be effectively fractional due to boundary effects, defects, or nontrivial global structure.

Several settings can give rise to half-instanton configurations. They may appear when theories are defined on spaces with boundaries, orbifolds, or twisted boundary conditions, where boundary or defect contributions alter the effective topological charge seen in the bulk. In such cases, a half-instanton can be interpreted as a boundary-localized object or as part of a composite configuration that yields a net half-unit of topological charge within the relevant region. The concept is often discussed alongside fractional instantons and other non-perturbative, semi-classical phenomena.

The half-instanton is typically described in terms of its role in non-perturbative dynamics, including potential contributions to the path integral and to vacuum structure or correlation functions in theories with reduced symmetry or nontrivial topology. Its precise definition and the legitimacy of assigning a half-unit of topological charge depend on the chosen boundary conditions, the global properties of the gauge group, and how singularities or defects are treated.

In the literature, halfinstanton is used informally and is not as standardized as the notions of instanton or fractional instanton. When encountered, it is usually characterized as a fractional, boundary-bound, or defect-associated contribution rather than a globally defined solitary solution on a closed manifold.
