The concept of brushing dates back to ancient civilizations. Early brushes used natural fibers and animal bristles mounted on wooden handles. In the 18th-20th centuries, manufactured brushes with boar bristles and later nylon bristles became common. Today, common categories include boar bristle brushes for smoothing, nylon or mixed-bristle brushes for detangling, vent brushes for speed-drying, paddle brushes for straightening, and round brushes for curling.

Bristle materials include boar hair, nylon, and synthetic blends. Boar bristles transmit scalp oils to hair, adding shine; nylon bristles help detangle and resist breakage. Some brushes have ball tips to protect the scalp. Designs vary: paddle shapes for smoothing; vented or cushion bases to improve airflow; round barrels of various diameters for curling and styling.

To clean, remove hair and wash with mild soap, then air-dry. Do not soak wooden handles. Use on dry or damp hair; start detangling at the ends and work upward to the roots. Avoid brushing aggressive or wet hair; limit friction by using a wide-tooth comb on tangled areas. Sanitize regularly to reduce bacteria.

When choosing, consider hair type, scalp sensitivity, and budget. Fine or damaged hair benefits from softer bristles; thick or curly hair may need detangling or vent designs. Boar-bristle brushes are often praised for smoothing; synthetic brushes reduce animal product use. Environmental notes: some brushes are recyclable; replace when bristles wear; consider wood handles from sustainable sources.
