Haimasyöpä, also known as pancreatic cancer, refers to the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the pancreas. The pancreas is a gland located behind the stomach that produces enzymes for digestion and hormones like insulin and glucagon to regulate blood sugar.

The most common type of pancreatic cancer originates in the ducts that carry digestive enzymes, known as pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Cancers can also arise in the hormone-producing cells, called neuroendocrine tumors, which are less common.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer often develop late and can be vague, making early diagnosis challenging. These may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal or back pain, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, and changes in stool.

Risk factors associated with developing pancreatic cancer include smoking, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, obesity, and a family history of the disease. Age is also a factor, with the risk increasing after age 65.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests such as CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds, often followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancer cells. Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and the patient's overall health. Surgery to remove the tumor is the most effective treatment if the cancer is detected early and has not spread. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be used to control cancer growth or manage symptoms. Research into new treatments and earlier detection methods is ongoing.
