HPVininfectie

HPVininfectie refers to an infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a very common group of viruses, with over 200 related types. Most HPV infections are asymptomatic and clear on their own without causing any health problems. However, some HPV types can cause warts, including genital warts, common warts on hands and feet, and plantar warts.

Other, more concerning, types of HPV can lead to cancer. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV types is the primary cause of cervical cancer. It can also cause other anogenital cancers, such as anal, penile, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Additionally, some HPV types are linked to certain head and neck cancers.

Transmission of HPV occurs through direct skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be spread through non-sexual close skin contact.

Vaccines are available that protect against the most common and dangerous types of HPV, significantly reducing the risk of HPV-related cancers and genital warts. Regular screening, such as Pap tests and HPV tests, are recommended for women to detect precancerous changes caused by HPV infection in the cervix. There is no cure for HPV itself, but treatments are available for the conditions it can cause, such as warts and cancer.
