HFSAPFS

HFSAPFS is a proposed hybrid filesystem concept that seeks to combine elements of Apple's older Hierarchical File System Plus (HFS+) with the newer Apple File System (APFS). The idea is to provide a pathway that preserves compatibility with existing HFS+ volumes while offering APFS-like capabilities such as space-efficient metadata, improved crash resilience, and modern data integrity features.

Design concept: HFSAPFS would either operate as a two-layer system, with a compatibility layer that reads and writes HFS+ data structures while a native APFS-like layer provides copy-on-write operations, snapshots, and encryption, or as an integrated file system that interoperates both code paths. It would require careful mapping between HFS+ catalogs and APFS structures, and a management layer to handle conversion and metadata consistency across transitions.

Potential benefits and challenges: In theory, it could ease transition for users with legacy HFS+ drives while enabling newer features on the same volume. However, significant hurdles include architectural complexity, performance implications, data integrity risks during mixed-mode operation, and lack of official support or standardization. No major operating system has delivered a production implementation.

Status: HFSAPFS remains a concept discussed in theoretical or experimental contexts rather than an officially released filesystem. It is not part of current macOS or other mainstream platforms.
