HEVhepatitis, also known as hepatitis E, is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). It is a self-limiting disease that typically resolves on its own within a few weeks to months. However, in some individuals, particularly pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems, it can lead to severe complications.

HEV is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated water or food. In industrialized countries, transmission can also occur through the consumption of undercooked pork, deer, or shellfish. The virus is widespread in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries with poor sanitation.

Symptoms of HEV hepatitis are often mild and can include fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Some individuals may experience no symptoms at all. Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests that detect HEV antibodies or the virus itself.

Treatment for HEV hepatitis is generally supportive, focusing on rest, hydration, and a balanced diet. In severe cases, especially in immunocompromised individuals or pregnant women, antiviral medications may be considered. Prevention strategies include ensuring access to clean water and proper sanitation, as well as safe food handling practices. Vaccination against HEV is available in some regions but not widely used globally.
