HCFC122a

HCFC-122a, also known as dichlorotrifluoroethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) with the chemical formula C2HCl2F3. It is a colorless liquid with a mild odor. HCFC-122a has been used as a refrigerant, a blowing agent for foams, and a cleaning solvent. However, like other HCFCs, it is an ozone-depleting substance and a greenhouse gas, albeit with a lower ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) compared to older chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, and subsequent amendments, have mandated a phase-out of HCFCs. Developed countries have largely completed their phase-out of HCFC production and consumption, while developing countries are in the process of phasing them out. HCFC-122a has found limited application due to environmental regulations. Research into alternatives with lower environmental impact has led to the development and adoption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), and natural refrigerants. The production and use of HCFC-122a are therefore significantly restricted globally.
