Höyrylamppu, often translated as vapor lamp or steam lamp, refers to a type of electric lamp that produces light by passing an electric arc through a vaporized substance. This process causes the vapor to emit light, which can range in color depending on the specific substance used.

There are several types of vapor lamps, each with distinct characteristics and applications. Mercury vapor lamps, one of the earliest forms, were widely used for street lighting due to their efficiency and long lifespan. They produce a bluish-white light. Sodium vapor lamps are another common type, known for their yellow or orange light, making them ideal for applications where color rendering is less critical, such as highway illumination. Metal halide lamps represent a more advanced form, incorporating various metal halides into the vapor mixture to achieve a whiter and more natural-looking light, often used in sports stadiums and large indoor spaces. High-pressure sodium lamps offer a balance between efficiency and good color rendering compared to their low-pressure counterparts.

The operation of a höyrylamppu typically requires a ballast, a device that limits the current flowing through the lamp and provides the initial high voltage needed to start the arc. Vapor lamps are generally more energy-efficient than incandescent lamps and have a longer operational life. However, their light quality, particularly color rendering, can vary significantly, and some may require a warm-up period to reach full brightness.
