Hõõrdepõletik, also known as friction burn or chafing, is a type of skin irritation caused by prolonged or repetitive rubbing between skin surfaces or between skin and clothing. It typically occurs in areas where skin is in constant contact and moisture can accumulate, such as the inner thighs, armpits, groin, and nipples. The friction breaks down the outer layers of the skin, leading to redness, soreness, and in more severe cases, blistering or weeping.

Factors that increase the risk of hõõrdepõletik include excessive sweating, tight-fitting clothing made of non-breathable materials, obesity, and certain physical activities like running, cycling, or hiking. Moisture, whether from sweat or humidity, exacerbates the friction by softening the skin and reducing its natural protective barrier.

Applying anti-chafing products such as balms, powders, or lubricants to susceptible areas before activity can create a protective barrier. Maintaining good hygiene and keeping skin dry is also important.

Treatment for mild hõõrdepõletik usually involves cleaning the affected area gently with mild soap and water, followed by applying a soothing moisturizer or barrier cream. Allowing the skin to air dry and avoiding further friction is crucial for healing. In cases of blistering or severe irritation, a doctor may recommend antibiotic ointments to prevent infection or more specialized treatments.
