Hímivarsejtekhez, more commonly known as sperm, are the male reproductive cells in many eukaryotic organisms, including humans. These microscopic cells are produced in the testes through a process called spermatogenesis. Each sperm cell consists of a head, which contains the genetic material (DNA) in the form of chromosomes, a midpiece packed with mitochondria to provide energy, and a tail, or flagellum, which enables motility.

The primary function of sperm is to fertilize a female egg cell (ovum). During sexual intercourse, sperm are deposited into the female reproductive tract. Their journey involves swimming through the cervix, uterus, and into the fallopian tubes, where fertilization typically occurs. The fusion of a sperm with an ovum results in a zygote, the first cell of a new organism.

The production and maturation of sperm are complex processes regulated by hormones, primarily testosterone. Sperm count, motility, and morphology are crucial factors for male fertility. Various factors, including lifestyle, environmental exposures, and underlying medical conditions, can affect sperm health. Specialized medical tests, such as semen analysis, are used to evaluate these parameters.
