Härteprüfungen, also known as hardness tests, are a common method in materials science and engineering to determine the resistance of a material to localized deformation, such as scratching, abrasion, or indentation. These tests are crucial for quality control, material selection, and understanding the mechanical properties of metals, plastics, ceramics, and other materials.

The principle behind most hardness tests involves applying a known force to an indenter of a specific geometry, which is pressed into the surface of the material being tested for a defined period. The size or depth of the indentation left after the force is removed is then measured. A harder material will exhibit a smaller indentation compared to a softer material under the same conditions.

Several standardized hardness testing methods exist, each with its own indenter type, load application, and measurement technique. Prominent examples include the Rockwell hardness test, which measures the depth of penetration; the Brinell hardness test, which measures the diameter of the indentation left by a hardened steel or tungsten carbide ball; and the Vickers hardness test, which uses a diamond pyramid indenter and measures the diagonal of the resulting square indentation. Shore hardness is commonly used for polymers and elastomers, employing a spring-loaded needle or cone.

The results of hardness tests are typically expressed in specific units, such as HRC (Rockwell C), HB (Brinell), or HV (Vickers). These values provide a practical and often reproducible measure of a material's resistance to surface deformation, which is directly related to its wear resistance and ability to withstand surface stresses.
