Gyökérrothadás, commonly known as root rot, is a plant disease that affects the root systems of various plants. It is caused by a variety of fungal and oomycete pathogens, including species of Phytophthora, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. These pathogens thrive in moist, poorly drained soil conditions, making overwatering a significant contributing factor. Symptoms of root rot can vary depending on the plant species and the specific pathogen involved, but often include stunted growth, yellowing or wilting leaves, and a general decline in plant health.

Upon close examination, the roots of an infected plant may appear brown, mushy, or discolored, and may be covered in a slimy coating. In advanced stages, the roots may be completely decayed, leading to the plant's eventual death. The pathogens responsible for root rot can survive in the soil for extended periods, making prevention and management crucial.

Prevention strategies focus on creating an environment unfavorable to the pathogens. This includes ensuring proper soil drainage, avoiding overwatering, and using clean tools and pots. For plants susceptible to root rot, using well-draining potting mixes and avoiding waterlogged conditions is essential. When root rot is suspected, prompt action is necessary. Removing infected plants and soil can help prevent the spread of the disease. In some cases, fungicides may be used, but their effectiveness can be limited once the disease has progressed. Improving soil aeration and reducing moisture levels are often the most effective management strategies.
