Gyógyszerátalakítók, known in English as drug metabolizers, are substances that facilitate the chemical transformation of drugs within the body. This process, primarily occurring in the liver, is crucial for drug efficacy and safety. Metabolism can alter a drug's activity, making it more potent, less potent, or entirely inactive. It also plays a key role in converting drugs into more water-soluble forms, allowing for easier excretion from the body, usually via the kidneys.

The primary enzymes responsible for drug metabolism are part of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily. These enzymes can catalyze a wide range of reactions, including oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis. Different individuals have variations in their CYP enzyme activity due to genetic factors, age, diet, and the presence of other medications. These variations can lead to significant differences in how quickly or effectively a drug is metabolized, impacting its therapeutic effect and the risk of adverse reactions.

Understanding drug metabolism is vital in pharmacology and medicine. It helps in determining appropriate drug dosages, predicting potential drug-drug interactions, and designing new drugs with improved pharmacokinetic profiles.
