These lanes are typically implemented on busy roadways, such as highways or major arterial streets, where congestion is a significant issue.

The primary purpose of a gyorsjárat is to bypass general traffic and offer a more direct or less obstructed route. Common types of vehicles allowed in these lanes include public transportation (buses), high-occupancy vehicles (HOVs), and sometimes emergency vehicles. The specific eligibility criteria vary by location and the design of the system. For instance, in some areas, an HOV lane might require at least two or three occupants per vehicle.

The implementation of gyorsjáratok aims to incentivize carpooling and the use of public transport, thereby reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road.
