Guturi

Guturi is a fictional ethnic group and language used in speculative literature and worldbuilding. In the imagined setting, Guturi communities inhabit the archipelago of Yara, a chain of tropical islands off a larger mainland coastline. The Guturi people are diverse in dialect and appearance, with settlements ranging from coastal fishing towns to forest villages. Traditionally, their economy centers on fishing, boatbuilding, and inter-island trade, supplemented by crafts such as wood carving and textile weaving.

The Guturi language is the native tongue of the Guturi people. It is described as an agglutinative language with a subject–object–verb (SOV) word order and a rich system of noun classifiers. Historically it employed a locally developed syllabary in traditional contexts, while modern administration often uses the Latin script. There are several mutually intelligible dialects, among which Coastal Guturi and Islander Guturi are the most prominent.

History and origins: In lore, Guturi trace their ancestry to seafaring clans that established trade routes across Yara and nearby shores. Contact with neighboring peoples grew through centuries of coastal commerce, followed by colonial influence and later political reorganizations. In the contemporary setting, the Guturi participate in a loose federation that provides local autonomy while coordinating defense, education, and inter-island infrastructure.

Traditional beliefs emphasize ancestors and nature spirits; the practice varies by island, with coastal communities favoring seafaring rituals and forest communities focusing on land healing and herbal knowledge.
