GummiBlanket

Gummiblanket is a German-language term that translates to “rubber blanket.” In English-language printing, the corresponding term is typically “printing blanket” or “rubber blanket.” The concept refers to a flexible rubber sheet used on a blanket cylinder in offset lithography to transfer ink from a printing plate to the final substrate.

In operation, ink is first picked up by the impression (plate) cylinder, then transferred to the rubber blanket on the blanket cylinder, and finally impressed onto paper or another substrate. This indirect transfer method allows for consistent ink transfer across a range of materials, including porous and non-porous stocks, and helps accommodate uneven or rough surfaces. The blanket also provides cushioning, helping to regulate pressure and image uniformity across the press run.

Materials and construction vary by application. Rubber blankets are commonly made from natural rubber or synthetic elastomers (such as nitrile or neoprene), often with a fabric or foil backing to provide tensile strength. They may be described as hard or soft, depending on the desired resistance and the specific printing requirement. The mounting system and the finish of the blanket surface influence factors such as color fidelity, dot gain, and wear resistance.

Maintenance and wear are important considerations. Regular inspection for nicks, scoring, or embedded debris, along with proper blanket tensioning and cleaning, helps prevent defects like ghosting, mottle, or uneven color. Worn or damaged blankets are typically replaced to maintain print quality and press efficiency.
