In most contexts it refers to firms with 250 or more employees, though the exact threshold can vary by country, sector, or statistical system. It forms the upper end of a size-based distinction that also includes Kleinbetriebe and Mittelbetriebe.

Großbetriebe are typically characterized by a high level of organizational complexity. They usually operate with a professional, hierarchical management structure, divided into specialized departments. Production tends to be capital intensive and highly integrated, often spanning multiple plants or regions and supported by formal planning, standardized processes, and extensive supply chains. Large enterprises typically have substantial financial resources, enabling large-scale investment in technology, infrastructure, and human capital.

In economic and social contexts, Großbetriebe play a major role in manufacturing, energy, transportation, and other capital-intensive sectors. They contribute significantly to GDP, export activity, and employment, but their size can also entail greater administrative overhead, longer decision cycles, and increased exposure to macroeconomic risk.
